What is NASA?
NASA stands for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It is an agency of the United States government responsible for developing space exploration programs to benefit humanity, as well as overseeing all aspects of American aeronautics and aerospace research.
The agency was established on July 29, 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in response to the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik 1 earlier that year, with its own annual budget separate from that of the Department of Defense (although 80% of its funding comes from the latter). Since February 2006, NASA’s mission statement has been to “pioneer the future in space exploration…for out destiny.” [ARTICLE END]
